Xiaomi has been incorporating in-display fingerprint sensors in their flagship smartphones for a number of years now, but they have all been optical sensors. The same goes for OnePlus. However, there are indications that this may change next year with the Xiaomi 15 series and OnePlus 13.
According to information from two different sources on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, Xiaomi is currently experimenting with ultrasonic fingerprint sensors for the upcoming Xiaomi 15 flagship lineup, which is already in the works.

The Xiaomi 15 will retain the completely flat screen design of its predecessor, while the Ultra version will feature a more curved glass similar to the 14 Ultra.
Not only Xiaomi, but the OnePlus 13 is also rumored to be making the switch to an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, joining the ranks of Samsung’s flagships and some high-end vivo devices in utilizing this technology, which has shown promise in delivering faster and more accurate unlocking.
These devices are still in the early stages of development, set to launch towards the end of the year in China and likely in early 2025 in other markets, so there may be changes ahead. Nonetheless, the prospect of seeing more smartphones equipped with ultrasonic fingerprint readers is certainly intriguing.
