So you’ve decided to buy a used 70cc motorcycle, and you most probably want one with a low budget and low running cost, i.e., choosing a 70cc could be the best option.
We know that 70cc is a very low-budget motorcycle and a very simple motorcycle. However, there’re still some important things that you should see and consider before buying it in a used condition, especially from the local market and classified platforms.
Check for How Many Previous Owners’ Bikes Has
Just note the formula:
More the previous owners a vehicle has = Lower the resale the vehicle will have.
Previous owners, basically it means how many times the motorcycle has been transferred to other names.
For example, a 1st owner is the person who bought the motorcycle for the first time in brand new condition, registered the bike and then sold it. Then, the second owner transferred the bike to his own name. If the second owner again sells that vehicle to a person and that person transfers that vehicle to his own name again, he’ll be the third owner, and so on.
But it’s not always that if the bike was previously owned by 4 people, it’ll have 4 owners. Some people don’t transfer the bike so that its resale will not drop.
For each additional owner, the resale should be dropped to at least Rs.4,000.
Biometric of the Motorcycle is Very Important
Biometric is very important. Otherwise, you can’t transfer the vehicle in your own name, and due to its non-transferability, its resale will decrease significantly, and most people will hesitate to buy this type of bike.
What is a Biometric?
Basically, when selling a Punjab-registered vehicle, the owner has to submit his biometric fingerprint to the excise to verify that he’s selling his vehicle and the vehicle is no longer in his possession, and the new owner is free to transfer that vehicle to his own name.
The biometric can be submitted through any Nadra E-sahulat agent, usually those shopkeepers who deal in Easypaisa and Jasscash, they are also Nadra E-sahulat agents.
Without the biometric of the owner, the new owner can’t transfer the vehicle.
Therefore, you must make sure that the vehicle’s biometrics are available. Check through the ePay Punjab application. On the app, go to “Transfer of Vehicle” and enter the vehicle number plate. There, you’ll see if the owner’s biometric has been submitted.
Check if the Motorcycle is Accidented by looking at the “Aainak” of the Bike
From the Aainak, you can see if the bike is accidental or not. Normal accidents don’t affect the motorcycle, but if the accident was so strong that it impacted the chassis of the bike, it’s alignment will go out and can never be restored again, and the resale will drop significantly.
Signs in Aainak that mean the bike is an accident:
- Pain is chipped off
- Heavy scratches
- Weld spots, like in the image above
- Crack
- Dent
- The Aainak side is newly painted
Now, if the bike is an accident but the mechanic/denter was too good and skilled, then its alignment might get back to its genuine condition, but resale will still remain low.
Rs.10,000 always drops if the bike is accidented.
Check for Engine Condition Through Sound
Now, bring your ears very close to the engine and listen to these sounds:
- Rattling noise = Ring piston issue
- Heavy tick tick noise = Tappets out of adjustment or broken tappets
- Loud noise coming from the head = Camshaft issue
- Grinding noise in a specific gear = That specific gear is broken
- Chain grinding noise or rattling noise from the cylinder= Camshaft chain issue. This is not so serious and can be solved for Rs.800 PKR without opening the engine.
If any of this issue occurs, the mechanic will have to open the complete engine, which also affects the resale if the engine has never been opened.
Clutch Condition
Now, take a test ride and try to identify these issues:
- Crying noise when accelerating = Clutch bearing issue, but it sounds nice tbh.
- You’re giving throttle, but the bike isn’t picking up speed as it should be = worn-out clutch plates.
- High RPMs but the bike isn’t accelerating = worn-out clutch plates
- Grinding noise when releasing the clutch = Defect in the clutch plates, but not so serious and doesn’t affect the engine’s health.
- Burning smell from the right side of engine = Extremely worn out clutch plates
- Kick is slipping = Extremely worn out clutch plates
A 70cc clutch replacement costs Rs.2500 if you install a Crown clutch and Rs.4000 for an Atlas Honda clutch.
Check for the electrical system and battery in the bike
Now do the following test to check the bike’s electrical system:
- All 4 indicators.
- Press the brakes to see if the brake light turns on or not
- Check horn
These three things are always connected to the battery and should work when the switch is on, but the engine is off.
Only the headlight, speed-o-meter, and backlight are on the engine current and will only work when the engine is started.
If none of these things are working, it means the bike requires a complete new wiring harness, which will cost Rs.2500 for an Atlas Honda wiring harness.
File of the motorcycle is very important
File is must to transfer the bike on new owner name, if it’s lost, the bike drops to 50% of its original price if it is sold with file.
The file contains documents including:
- Registration letter
- B.form
- Invoice
- Receipt
- Number plate document provided by Excise
All these things are essential to transfer the bike to the new owner’s name. So if the previous owner has lost the file, the bike will stay on its previous owner name.
