Karachi has the highest urban crime ratio in Pakistan. Burglary, theft, and robbery are standard in Karachi.
You park your car outside your home, and the next morning, you know your vehicle is standing on bricks because the tires have been stolen. If the tires aren’t stolen, the entire dashboard might be missing, or side mirrors might be stolen. Or, in extreme cases, the whole car could be vanished. Welcome to Karachi!
Just for information, we’re mentioning which car models and their parts are most frequently stolen in Karachi.
Honda Vezel (Side Mirrors)
There are only 4 screws in the bottom of Vezel’s side mirrors that keep the mirrors intact in place. To steal them, the thief only needs to unscrew the side mirrors with any regular Philips screwdriver and unclip the wires of the retractable motor and indicator; that’s it.
Another problem with Vezel is that it’s a Japanese imported car. So side mirrors aren’t cheap. The new pair of Vezel side mirrors will cost you about 180,000 PKR. If you go with used Kaabli mirrors, they are not cheap either, i.e., 70-90k PKR.
These mirrors are then exported to Lahore’s Bilal Gunj, where they are sold as a Kaabli part, and Jalalabad, Afghanistan, where they are smuggled to other Asian countries.
The only solution is to pray from Allah and recite Ayat-ul-Qursi on the car so that thieves don’t steal your mirrors.
Toyota Corolla (Infotainment)
The Corolla’s infotainment is the first choice of thieves. Stealing it is easy. The thieves will break the rear quarter window, unlock the doors, and get access to the interior. First of all, the thief will unscrew the steering column and unclip the ignition switch. Then, they’ll pull out the push start button, which is only stuck through the duct tape by the company. Finally, they’ll unclip the infotainment switch, unscrew it from the dashboard, and pull out the infotainment. It’s that easy!
In some cases, if the thief is an expert mechanic, they might vanish the whole dashboard, but it’s very rare, and they’ll most probably only take out the infotainment. The only way to prevent this issue is to park your car inside the house.
If you live in a flat without an indoor garage, put a rain cover on your car so thieves can’t identify the model.
Old Models of Cultus, Mehran, and Alto (Battery)
Unlike new cars, the hood locks on these old models are completely mechanical. This means that you can open their hood from outside if you know the trick, and thieves know that.
They put their fingers or a screwdriver under the hood lock, unclip it, and poof! They have access to your car’s engine bay. Then, these smart robbers remove the terminals from the battery and pull it out. When you come the next morning, you’ll notice that the car isn’t picking self, and that’s the moment you’ll realize the battery has been stolen.
All Local and Imported Cars (Wipers)
These are mostly stolen by roadside drunkards who just want a few rupees for their drugs. They usually have a wrench and a screwdriver and will steal the wipers and sell them off for 300-500 PKR, just enough for one dose of addiction.
All Cars (Tyres and Rims)
Tires stealing is the most common and oldest theft in Karachi. What they’ll do is put a jack under your car, lift it up, and pull out the tire of your car. They usually steal all four tires of the vehicle along with the rims and leave your car standing on the bricks.
The next morning, when you’ll come, you’ll see that your car’s tires are gone. But, you should at least thank them that they left your car on the bricks. Otherwise, you would have to spend a huge pile of money on the replacement of broken brake pads.
