To FIR or Not to FIR?
Police began registering FIRs against drivers without a valid license, but then Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Mustansar Feroze clarified that citizens with valid learner’s permits, expired licenses, or licenses from other countries would only face fines, not FIRs.
Additionally, Punjab’s caretaker CM Naqvi announced a three-day exemption from fines for those holding license tokens.
Issuance of 74,000 Licenses in a Day
The provincial traffic police reported a significant increase in the issuance of driving licenses, with 74,000 licenses being granted in a single day.
In Lahore, 24,000 licenses were issued, highlighting a remarkable surge in compliance with licensing requirements.
Availability of Licenses at Police Stations
To simplify the process of obtaining a learner’s license, the Lahore Traffic Police has made learner’s licenses easily accessible at police stations across Lahore, starting from December 6, 2023.
1566% Increase in License Fees
The provincial government approved a significant increase in driving license fees, raising the fee from Rs. 60 to Rs. 1000. This decision was met with criticism on social media.
Relief in Driving License Fee
The traffic police announced a relief for citizens, extending the deadline for obtaining licenses at the existing rate until December 31. Additionally, the proposed increase in driving license fees was postponed to Jan 9, 2024.
Surge in Annual License Fees
Starting January 1, 2024, the Punjab government increased the annual fees for learners, renewals, and new driving licenses.
The Lahore City Traffic Police announced the revised annual fees for different categories.
Renewal of Driving License Online
The Lahore City Traffic Police introduced an online system for renewing driving licenses, allowing candidates to renew their licenses for different durations. The police also mentioned the introduction of a new digital system, NET, which enables the download of local and international e-licenses.
