The National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) have announced a 200% increase in traffic violation fines on all highways in Pakistan. Back in October 2023, it was communicated that the authority had raised the fines on all motorways and highways across Pakistan to decrease violations and road accidents. The new fines came into effect on October 1, 2023 with revised rates for various violations, including:
- Seven new traffic rules being included.
- The fine for overspeeding increased to Rs. 2500 from the previous Rs. 750.
- The new fine for wrong will now be Rs. 1500 instead of the previous Rs. 300.
- Vehicles with broken or non-functioning headlights will be fined Rs. 5,000 compared to the old fine of Rs. 500.
- The revised challan rate for rash and careless driving is Rs. 1500 instead of Rs. 300.
Now Implemented Across Highways
When questioned about the implementation of these fines, an NHMP spokesperson informed PakWheels.com that they were implemented in two stages. “In the first stage, these were imposed only for cars and jeeps, specifically on motorways from October 1, 2023, and now in the second phase, from January 1, 2024, it is fully implemented in the areas of responsibility (AOR) of NHMP,” he explained.
This means the fines will be applicable at all major highways in the country, and it is crucial to drive carefully and safely to avoid these strict penalties. The news coincided with the Punjab government’s recent 20% increase in toll tax on the Lahore Ring Road, for more details you can read here.
