Apple had previously announced in mid-February that iOS 17.4 would no longer support progressive web apps in the EU due to the implementation of the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) and would instead introduce support for alternative app stores. This decision was met with significant online criticism.

However, Apple has now reversed its decision and confirmed that progressive web apps will continue to be supported in iOS 17.4 in the EU. Users will still be able to add these apps to their home screen, ensuring they launch in a separate window rather than a simple Safari shortcut.

Apple backtracks, won't remove progressive web apps in the EU after all

In an update on its developer website, Apple clarified:

Apple previously announced plans to discontinue support for Home Screen web apps in the EU to comply with the DMA. However, in response to requests, the existing support for Home Screen web apps will continue in iOS in the EU. This ensures that Home Screen web apps remain secure and aligned with iOS’s security and privacy model.

Apple initially claimed that only a small number of users would be impacted by this change, but the company has since acknowledged the importance of retaining support for progressive web apps.

Progressive web apps will still utilize Apple’s WebKit rendering engine, even if a third-party browser with its own rendering engine is selected. Compliance with the DMA will also necessitate support for third-party browsers with their own engines.
