The Digital Markets Act (DMA) from the European Union will allow iOS developers to finally distribute their apps through alternative app stores in the 27 member states. Epic Games had plans to bring its Epic Games Store to Europe, but Apple terminated their developer account, putting a halt to those plans for now.
Apple deemed Epic Games as “verifiably untrustworthy” and terminated their developer account citing concerns about contractual commitments and manipulation of proceedings in other jurisdictions. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney publicly criticized Apple’s approach to alternative iOS app stores and their commission system, a sentiment shared by Xbox and Spotify officials.
Despite being initially approved for an Apple developer account, Epic Games had their account terminated due to questions surrounding their contractual commitments. The EU Commission has requested further explanation from Apple regarding the termination of Epic’s developer account.
