Reports have been circulating for more than a year about the Apple Watch Ultra getting an upgraded microLED display, but delays due to production issues have pushed the expected release date to 2027. Recently, Apple has canceled a significant microLED order with Austrian company ams-Osram, believed to be for the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3.
Although Osram did not confirm that Apple was the client who withdrew from the deal, they did acknowledge that a major microLED project supporting their strategy was unexpectedly canceled, prompting a reevaluation of their microLED approach.
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has confirmed Apple’s cancellation of the microLED Apple Watch project with Osram. Kuo also revealed that Apple has abandoned all microLED-related projects due to concerns that the technology would not provide significant value to their products and that production costs were too high.
Despite this, there are still skeptics like Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who suggests that ams-Osram was just one of Apple’s microLED suppliers and believes that the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra is still set to receive the upgraded display technology. Rumors suggest that Apple may eventually transition to microLED displays across its entire product lineup, starting with the Apple Watch, followed by the iPad, iPhone, and MacBook.
