There is speculation that Apple could be working on a foldable iPhone or iPad in the future, as the company has obtained a patent for technology that prevents displays from creasing. This display technology involves chemical processing to thin the display at the folding area and may utilize different materials to ensure a smooth surface at all times.

Insiders in the industry from Korea suggest that a 2026 launch for a foldable Apple product is possible, in contrast to Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction that Apple’s first foldable screen product will be a 20.3” MacBook, set for release in 2027.

Apple’s patent details that grooves in the display area can be addressed by a transparent cover layer that overlaps the display panel, with an elongated groove or recess in the layer of glass parallel to the bend axis, while overlapping the bend axis for added strength.

A polymer can be applied as a liquid in the groove formed from the thinned portion, and cured with UV light, heat, catalysts, and other techniques to reinforce the locally thinned area.

The patent also suggests that changes to the composition of the glass may be necessary, such as replacing sodium with potassium to create compressive stress in surface layers for improved durability against scratching and wear.
