Pakistan is preparing to take a major step onto the global motorsports stage. The Punjab Tourism, Archaeology, and Museums Department, in collaboration with the Punjab Tourism Development Corporation (TDCP), is leading the country’s entry into the prestigious international Dakar Rally.
Faisal Shadikhel and Zafar Shadikhel, victorious champions of the February 2023 13th Cholistan Jeep Rally, will represent Pakistan and the TDCP in this year’s Dakar Rally. The pair, from Multan, will participate as drivers in the challenging terrain of Saudi Arabia.
Departure & Expectations
As the three-day Dakar Rally gets underway, Faisal and Zafar have already departed from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia. Secretary of Tourism Raja Jahangir Anwar, in a special media briefing, expressed pride in Pakistan’s debut in the Dakar Rally. He commended the flawless arrangements by the FIA teams and emphasized the historical significance of this moment.
The Dakar Rally, known as the world’s largest rally, covers a challenging track spanning over 5,000 kilometers. With participants from over 100 countries, this year’s event will take place in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, providing a tough test for the competing teams.
Secretary Anwar highlighted TDCP’s crucial role in the motorsports landscape, particularly its initiation of the Jeep Rally in the deserts of Thal and Cholistan. This initiative paved the way for similar rallies in other provinces, showcasing Pakistan’s growing prominence in international motorsports.
Global Recognition
The upcoming nineteenth International Cholistan Jeep Rally in February is already gaining international recognition from the Federation of International Automobile. The event attracts drivers from numerous nations, solidifying the country’s position on the global motorsport map.
