Decades are often characterized by popular phrases. If you’re a certain age, you likely grew up hearing the term “information superhighway” repeatedly. However, the 90s are behind us and the Internet is no longer new – now, it’s all about AI.
Competition in the AI field is intense, with multiple companies making rapid advancements. Google recently announced Gemini 1.5, claiming victory over OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Meanwhile, OpenAI introduced Sora, an impressive text-to-video generation system. Additionally, Nvidia has surpassed both Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and Amazon in market valuation.
Chances are, you’ve encountered AI and AI-generated content. But have you utilized AI yourself? If so, how frequently and for what purposes?
Image generation was an early area of focus for modern AI. Devices like the Galaxy S24 and Pixel 8 series use AI to modify images, such as removing or relocating objects and people. Some devices, like the S24, even create wholly original images with generative wallpapers.
Image generation also extends to applications like Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling and Qualcomm’s Game Super Resolution. In 2023, Apple unveiled Metal FX, based on AMD’s FidelityFX, for mobile devices.
AI has proven adept at translation, popularized by Google researchers with transformer technology. Google’s Pixel Buds Pro now offer real-time translation, and Samsung is developing similar features for the Galaxy Buds series.
AI’s language capabilities are also harnessed for speech transcription, capable of replacing traditional keyboards and summarizing spoken content. Conversely, AI can also convert text to speech, enabling browsers to read articles aloud or creating personal audio books.
And let’s not forget about chat bots – more advanced than Cleverbot but not quite on the level of HAL 9000. Some use chat bots as an alternative to traditional Internet searches, for work or homework assistance, or simply for entertainment.
So, how frequently do you utilize AI? And if you do, what purposes do you use it for? (Note: multiple answers are acceptable.)
