Apple has made a major announcement regarding app distribution on its iOS App Store in the EU. The company is opening up its mobile operating system to alternative app stores in the 27 EU member states. This move has already caught the attention of Epic Games, which is looking to bring back its popular game Fortnite.
Later this year, Epic Games plans to launch its own Epic Games Store for iOS, which will feature Fortnite. An official launch date for the iOS games store has not yet been provided by Epic.
This development is significant given the past dispute between Apple and Epic Games. In 2020, Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store due to policy violations related to payment systems. However, the potential launch of the new Epic Games Store on iOS is subject to Apple’s approval as the company will have oversight over third-party app stores.
Under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), the new changes will also allow game streaming apps on iOS, potentially bringing Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now to the platform later this year.
