The Vauxhall VX220 is a timeless high-speed car that offers a thrilling driving experience. Although it may not be as luxurious, it is practical with its agile handling and vintage interior. Only 100 lime-colored VX220s exist worldwide, and we are lucky to have number 23 in Pakistan. Currently undergoing modifications, this classic roadster is a dream car for any enthusiast.
Exploring the Vauxhall VX220 Legacy
For those curious about its origins, the Vauxhall VX220 is the more practical sibling of the Lotus Elise, known for its simplicity, functionality, and impressive performance. It was produced as part of an agreement between Lotus and General Motors, sharing the same production line as the Lotus Elise in Norfolk. Surprisingly, only 10 percent of its parts were shared with Lotus. In other markets, it was known by different names, such as Opel Speedster or Daewoo. Vauxhall, the oldest British car manufacturer, produced its first car in 1903.
Specifications and Features
The VX220 was initially launched in 2000 with a 2.2L naturally aspirated engine. In 2003, an upgraded version was released with a turbocharged 2L engine. The base model generated 155bhp of power, 149lb-ft of torque, a top speed of 135mph, and accelerated from 0 to 60mph in 5.6 seconds.
This lightweight car weighs around 800 kg, featuring an aluminum chassis and suspension. The majority of its parts are made from carbon fiber for optimal aerodynamics. With a rear-engine layout, it boasts a removable top, distinctive diffuser, McLaren-like dual exhausts, 16-inch tires, and an Evolution-like steering wheel.
Performance
Designed following the Lotus Elise’s principles of precise handling, the VX220 offers a go-kart-like driving experience. It excels in speed and agility, but its limited cabin space may pose challenges for taller individuals during entry and exit.
After years of underuse, this VX220 is currently undergoing modifications at a local dealership and will soon be restored to its former glory. For more information on classic cars and automotive trends, visit PakWheels’ official website.
