A possible fuel shortage in Pakistan is expected, specifically in the cities of Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, due to road blockades and lockdowns across major highways and motorways caused by an ongoing political protest. According to media reports, senior government officials have stated that the Petroleum goods-carrying tankers and lorries movement has faced severe issues in major cities due to official barricades.
OGRA and Oil Suppliers
Furthermore, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has also expressed concerns over the situation, warning that it could disrupt the supply of petroleum products. Meanwhile, oil transporters have told the media that they are actively working with local authorities to address the issue and ensure a smooth supply of fuel.
In addition, most private companies are taking additional precautions when rolling out their fleet. The tankers on the roads were instructed to offload their stocks at the nearest available petrol stations for safety reasons and to avoid any potential mishap.
Pumps & Fuel Shortage in Pakistan
As a result of this situation, retail pumps, especially in the major cities, are drying out as Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi have become hotspots of the agitation and countermeasures taken by the government. Amid all this, officials have revealed that all the supply pressure has shifted to the state-run Pakistan State Oil (PSO) to keep the supply alive.
The first hint regarding supply disruption was given to the government at the federal and provincial levels and then to OGRA for immediate measures. Early today, PSO also approached the Punjab chief secretary and Inspector General police (IGPs) of Punjab and Lahore to look into the matter. The PSO has sought special “assistance in facilitating fuel transportation with particular attention to replenishing stocks in Lahore Division.”
Furthermore, PSO has asked for immediate attention from the federal and provincial governments to look into the “critical disruption in fuel supply across Punjab, especially in Lahore Division, due to closure of key highways and linked routes. This situation has arisen due to the current law and order challenges.”
