Pakistan’s road network is undergoing a significant transformation, with the federal government unveiling ambitious plans to modernize and expand key motorways. The National Highway Authority (NHA) is at the forefront of these initiatives, aiming to enhance the overall travel experience for millions of commuters.

Expanding Motorway Capacity

One of the key focuses is the expansion of critical motorways to accommodate the ever-increasing traffic flow. Federal Minister for Communications, Abdul Aleem Khan, has highlighted the need to increase the number of lanes on the Lahore-Sialkot-Kharian to Islamabad Motorway from four to six.

This strategic expansion is expected to alleviate congestion, improve traffic flow, and significantly reduce travel time.

Embracing Technology: Electronic Toll Plazas

In a move towards a more efficient and streamlined road network, the NHA is exploring the implementation of electronic toll plazas. This innovative system will replace traditional toll booths with automated systems that utilize electronic tags for toll collection.

By eliminating the need for cash transactions and manual processes, electronic toll plazas promise to significantly reduce wait times at toll points, leading to a smoother and faster travel experience.

EV Charging Stations on Motorways

Two weeks back, an update narrated that meeting of the committee on EV policy yielded several key decisions aimed at accelerating the adoption of EVs in the country, including:

Affordable Charging: The government has approved a power tariff of Rs. 39.75 per unit for EV charging stations located along motorways.

Boosting Local Production: The government is exploring financing options to incentivize the production of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers in Pakistan

Expanding Charging Network: The government plans to set up 40 EV charging stations along motorways within the next three months. This will facilitate long-distance travel for EV owners and encourage wider adoption.

Promoting EV Adoption: The government is working on a comprehensive financing plan to make EVs more affordable for consumers. This includes exploring options like subsidized loans and tax breaks.
