Overview

Has the OnePlus 12R moved away from its R roots and taken on the characteristics of the T series? Unlike previous R models, which were usually a reworked version of the China-exclusive OnePlus Ace, available only in India, the OnePlus 12R is a global release. Like the Ts, it will be available in various markets, including the US and parts of Europe. However, just like the Rs and Ts, the 12R is not quite up to par with the flagship model in terms of chipset and camera, but comes with a more budget-friendly price tag.

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip from the previous year, the base model comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There is also a 16GB/256GB variant, but no 512GB option, indicating that the 12R is a step down from the flagship model.

Unlike its flagship counterpart, the 12R features a camera system with a less impressive telephoto and ultrawide lenses, along with a main unit that is not remarkable. However, while it may not be the best in terms of camera quality, the 12R still offers reliable performance.

One area where the 12R surpasses its flagship counterpart is the inclusion of a larger 5,500mAh battery and 100W charging. It also boasts an IP65 rating, similar to the flagship model.

While the 12R’s display is comparable to the flagship’s, the promo materials emphasize that it has “the most advanced OnePlus display, ever,” and slightly lower resolution which is not significant. The phone also includes additional features such as an infrared emitter, stereo speakers, and an optical fingerprint reader similar to the flagship model.

Unboxing the OnePlus 12R

The OnePlus 12R retail package closely resembles that of the 12, with both pieces of the box sporting a red color scheme. While the 12R badge is prominent on the front of the box, the OnePlus logo is less prominent.

Inside the box, buyers will find a 100W adapter (maxes out at 80W for 110V power sources) and a USB-A-to-C cable. In some regions, a protective case and additional items such as a sticker sheet and a ‘Red Cable Club’ membership card may also be included.
