The second Developer Preview of Android 15 introduced built-in support for satellite messaging, and Google seems to be developing a custom user interface for the upcoming Pixel 9 series. A preview shared by @Nail_Sadykov gives us a glimpse of how this system will operate.
Similar to Apple’s setup, users will need to direct their phone towards the satellite with the help of a guiding UI. Initially displayed in full screen, the UI can be minimized to allow access to other applications. The objective is to maintain the satellite icon within the circle for a stable connection.
To ensure a clear signal, users must be outdoors with a clear view of the sky, as obstructions like buildings, mountains, and trees can interfere with the signal. The app will prompt users with questions designed to provide emergency services with essential information to assist them effectively.
Aiming for the satellite • Minimized view • A reminder to get out in the open
Similar to Apple’s system, this feature, known as “Emergency SOS,” appears to be intended for emergencies only, requiring carrier support (even in areas with no network coverage).
T-Mobile has been mentioned as a carrier option, but since Google Fi operates on the T-Mobile network as an MVNO, it is hoped that Google will provide support for this new feature on its own carrier network.
