Did you ever experience engine misfiring, rough idling of engine, or struggling with poor acceleration? If yes, then most probably it’s time to swap spark plugs. The replacement of spark plugs in cars is sometimes relatively easy. However, it may be difficult to change them in some cars as the plugs are tough to reach in them.  So, if you are a newbie or have never changed the spark plugs in your car, then we will guide you every step of the way in this article.

Steps To Replace Spark Plugs

There are some essential ways to change spark plugs. Check out the steps below to easily figure out the location for the easy replacement of these plugs.

Tools Needed

Some essential and general tools needed to replace spark plugs are as follows.

  • Ratchet
  • Spark Plug socket
  • May be a couple of extensions
  • Universal joint extension (in case you have hard to reach spark plugs)
  • Gaping tool to make sure that gap on your spark plug is correct.
  • Offset boot pliers for removing spark plug wires

Location

The replacement procedure may vary depending upon the location of spark plugs. Therefore, you should check the owner’s manual to know the exact position.

Generally, a 4-cylinder engine has spark plugs  located on the top or side of the engine in a row. In addition, on an inline 6 cylinder, the plugs are located on top or side of the engine head. On V6 and V8 engines, plugs are placed separately on each side of the engine.

Let Engine Cool

You need to make sure that the engine is not running before removing spark plugs. Meanwhile, you should assemble the tools until the engine is getting cool.

Remove First Spark Plug

If you see the brown staining round around the edge of ceramic then there’s no need to worry about it. It is because it has nothing to do with the overall performance of the spark plug. On the other hand if the plug is corroded, has broken ceramic, worn-out electrodes, or has an inappropriate gap, it means the plug is wearing out and it’s time to replace it.

Measure The Gap

A spark plug should have a gap ranging in between .028-.060 inch (0.152 cm). If you have a pre-gapped spark plug, you need to check the air gap whether it is set correctly at the factory. Moreover, you can check the spark plug gap with a coil style in three easy steps

  • Consult the vehicle repair manual to determine the correct gap for your spark plugs.
  • Insert the spark plug gapping tool between the spark plugs electrodes.
  • Run the edge of the tool in between the electrodes to figure out the measurement.

Some copper spark plugs don’t come pre-gapped, so you must set the gap by hand.

Warning: Never try to adjust gaps on platinum or iridium spark plugs as their electrodes can get damaged.

Check Signs Of Wear

It is normal to replace the existing plugs if you have any white, limey build up around the electrodes. Furthermore, this build up suggests that you need to replace the electrodes. If the plugs are bent, black, or broken, then you may need to change them promptly.

 Correct Replacement

A good rule is to get the spark plugs which you have in your car currently.

Pro Tip: Never downgrade the plug. It means if your owners manual suggests an iridium plug, don’t use double platinum. It is because each car engine is supposed to run on a specific plug so use that for better performance and acceleration.

However, sometimes it’s okay to upgrade to a better plug. Before that, you need to check your car engine compatibility with the one you are using.

Cleaning Threads

The spark plugs are located under the wires. Before inserting, make sure to blow away any dirt surrounding the wire correction and make sure that you have a clean port.

Insert The New Spark Plugs

Use a boot plier to figure the spark plug from the housing slowly with caution. Connect the spark plug socket with the extension to replace the old spark plugs with new ones.

Pro Tip: Remember to replace the spark cables on the same plug where it is located and remove the masking tape once done. You can find the torque specifications of the spark plug mentioned in the vehicle’s service manual.

Lubricate Plugs

You need to put in a very small amount of anti-seize lubricants before installing them. In addition, you can use dielectric silicone grease inside the spark plug wire boot. It will help you in the future removal of spark plugs.

When you insert spark plugs, turn them backward slightly to avoid cross-threading. Ensure to turn the wire boot on the plug until it snugs tightly. However, if the boot will not properly attach, then it will cause the engine to misfire. It can cause the rough idling of the car with sluggish acceleration.
