A recent announcement from renowned car makers like Kia and Hyundai has sent shockwaves through the automotive industry. Both manufacturers have issued a significant recall affecting a combined total of over 208,000 electric vehicles (EVs). The core issue lies with a faulty Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which can lead to a loss of drive power, posing a serious safety risk to drivers.
Kia’s EV6
Kia’s recall targeted 62,872 of its popular EV6 models, specifically those manufactured between 2022 and 2024. The defective ICCU can cause the 12-volt battery to drain, resulting in a sudden loss of power while driving.
Once at the dealership, technicians will inspect the ICCU and replace it, if necessary. Additionally, they will update the ICCU’s software to address the underlying issue. Kia emphasizes the urgency of this recall, stating that it is illegal for dealers to sell or lease affected vehicles until the defect is rectified.
Hyundai’s EV Lineup
Hyundai’s recall is even more extensive, affecting 145,235 vehicles across its luxury Genesis brand and its own lineup. The affected models include the Genesis G80 EV, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Hyundai IONIQ 6.
Similar to Kia’s recall, Hyundai’s issue stems from a faulty ICCU that can cause the 12-volt battery to drain, leading to a loss of drive power. However, Hyundai has implemented a fail-safe mode to mitigate the risk.
When the fault is detected, the vehicle will enter a limited powe r mode, allowing for continued driving while gradually reducing power over time. Essential safety systems like airbags, brakes, and power steering will remain operational.
A Call to Action for Affected Owners
If you own a Kia EV6 or a Hyundai EV model within the affected range, it’s crucial to stay informed and take immediate action. Keep an eye out for official notification letters from the respective manufacturers, which are expected to be mailed out in January 2025.
If you experience any warning signs, such as audible chimes, warning lights, or a loss of power, contact your nearest dealership immediately. Do not hesitate to schedule an appointment to have your vehicle inspected and repaired.
This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and software updates. By staying up-to-date with the latest software and addressing any potential issues promptly, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure the safety of yourself and others on the road.
