In 2010, Samsung wasn’t the top-selling smartphone brand, and that just happened again in 2023. As per Canalys, and now IDC, Apple surpassed Samsung in smartphone sales for the first time in over a decade last year.
Apple’s 2023 sales, according to IDC, were 234.6 million, capturing 20.1% of the market share, while Samsung’s sales were 226.6 million, taking 19.4% of the market.
Xiaomi was in third place, shipping 145.9 million units, followed by Oppo with 103.1 million, and Transsion with 94.9 million units.
Apple’s shipments grew 3.7% from 2022, while Transsion’s grew 30.8%. On the flip side, Samsung’s shipments dropped 13.6%, Xiaomi’s by 4.7%, and Oppo’s by 9.9%. Overall, the shipment market fell by 3.2% in 2023.
In Q4 2023, Apple led with 80.5 million shipments, Samsung followed with 53 million, and Xiaomi was third with 40.7 million units.
Transsion and vivo were fourth and fifth in Q4 with 28.2 million and 24.1 million shipments, respectively. Overall, the market saw an 8.5% growth in Q4 2023 compared to Q4 2022.
