Today, Samsung introduced its first venture into the smart ring market with the Galaxy Ring. We had the opportunity to see the health tracker up close at MWC, and it is available in three official colors – Ceramic Black, Platinum Silver, and Gold.
The design of the ring is quite unique, with a concave shape that tapers into the middle like a miniature car rim. Regardless of the color chosen, it appears shiny and prone to smudges. Although the demo units were behind glass, Samsung representatives assured us that it is very lightweight and comfortable to wear all day.
Galaxy Ring in Ceramic Black
The Galaxy Ring will be available in US ring sizes 5 – 13, with the size specified inside the ring. Larger-sized rings will have slightly larger batteries, although Samsung has not provided specific details at this time.
While Samsung has not disclosed the specific sensors inside the Galaxy Ring, it is known to offer comprehensive sleep tracking capabilities including heart rate, breathing rate, night movement, and the detection of early signs of sleep apnea. Data can be viewed using a compatible Galaxy smartphone and the Samsung Health app, as the Galaxy Ring does not have screens or buttons.
Galaxy Ring in Platinum Silver
Samsung is promoting the Galaxy Ring as the perfect companion for the Galaxy Watch series, as the two devices can combine health and activity tracking data for more accurate results. The ring also serves as a sleeker alternative to smartwatches for tracking sleep.
Similar to newer Galaxy Watches, the Galaxy Ring calculates a Vitality score based on daily activity, sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability. Users can set well-being goals and receive progress feedback through Booster Cards in the Galaxy Health app.
Galaxy Ring in Gold
There are still many unknowns about the Galaxy Ring, such as pricing, compatibility with non-Samsung smartphones, potential support for iOS devices, and the release date. Samsung has promised to share more details later this year, leaving consumers to wait patiently for more information.
