Apple recently released the latest adoption rate statistics for its mobile operating systems, revealing an interesting trend where the uptake of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is significantly different from their predecessors.
The adoption of iOS 17 is trailing behind the adoption of iOS 16 at the same point last year. Currently, iOS 17 is installed on 76% of iPhones introduced in the last four years, compared to 81% for iOS 16 at a similar time. This small difference suggests a potential decrease in the perceived importance of iOS 17 and its subsequent updates, compared to iOS 16 a year ago.
Currently, 20% of iPhones introduced in the last four years are still running on iOS 16, while 4% are on earlier versions. In terms of all iPhones in use, iOS 17 holds a 66% share, with iOS 16 at 23% and earlier versions at a combined 11%.
Conversely, the adoption of iPadOS 17 is outperforming its predecessor from a year ago. iPadOS 17 is currently installed on 61% of iPads introduced in the last four years, compared to 29% for iPadOS 16 and 10% for earlier versions.
Last year, iPadOS 16 was only on 53% of devices introduced in the previous four years, making the increase in adoption for iPadOS 17 notable. Across all iPads in use, iPadOS 17 accounts for 53%, followed by iPadOS 16 at 29%, and other versions with 18%.
These figures outperform Android’s adoption rates, although it’s important to note that Apple manages a smaller number of devices compared to the diverse Android ecosystem.
