In his most recent newsletter, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has shared some fresh rumors about the upcoming release of iOS 18. According to Gurman’s sources, iOS 18 is anticipated to be one of the most significant software updates in the history of iOS.
One of the major expected updates is the inclusion of support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in the native Messages app. Apple has already declared its intention to introduce RCS support to iPhones by 2024, which will enable cross-platform features between iOS and Android devices. These features encompass higher resolution media sharing, enhanced group chats, read receipts, typing indicators, location sharing, and messaging via Wi-Fi, to name a few.
Another significant aspect of iOS 18 will be the advancements in AI for Siri. Gurman suggests that Apple will introduce generative AI capabilities to iOS through its own large language model (LLM), which will revolutionize Siri and other native apps like Messages. These new AI features will allow for improved natural language questions and auto-completed sentences.
Reportedly, Apple is also exploring generative AI features for Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, Xcode, and Shortcuts, aiming for seamless task automation for complex tasks. It’s still a long way to go before any official announcements as iOS 18 is expected to be unveiled at WWDC 24 in June.
