The highly anticipated OLED iPad Pros from Apple are on the horizon. Evidence of these new devices and their advanced display technology was uncovered in the iPadOS 17.5 firmware by the team at 9to5Mac.
In the firmware, four new iPad identifiers – iPad16,3, iPad16,4, iPad16,5, iPad16,6 – were found, expected to represent the various models of the iPad Pro including different sizes and connectivity options such as Wi-Fi and Cellular.
Reports indicate that the firmware hints at the sizes being 11 inches and 12.9 inches, with the display technology being OLED.
This information supports previously circulating rumors. It seems that Apple has assigned the production of the 12.9-inch OLED model exclusively to LG, while the 11-inch model will be produced by both LG and Samsung. The delay in panel production has pushed back the launch timeline for the new iPad Pro, now reaching 18 months since the last release.
In addition to the new iPad models, the release of iPadOS 17.5 introduces a new Apple Pencil with interesting features. The firmware mentions a new Apple Pencil that supports squeeze gestures, including “LongSqueeze” and “DoubleSqueeze”. It is also noted that the new Apple Pencil will be compatible with the Find My app.
Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter suggests that Apple will unveil the new iPad Pros, a redesigned Magic Keyboard, a new iPad Air (possibly in two sizes), and the Apple Pencil 3 in the second week of May.
