The current caretaker government in Punjab appears to be focused on providing relief to motorcyclists in the province. After the interim Chief Minister announced that there will be no FIR against learners with expired or international driving licenses, there is now an update for drivers without helmets.
In a recent development, the Lahore High Court has instructed the traffic police not to file FIRs against drivers without helmets during a hearing related to smog petitions. Justice Shahid Karim expressed that filing an FIR for not wearing a helmet seemed too severe and recommended increasing fines instead of pursuing cases against helmet violations.
A Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) from the traffic police informed the court that over 26,000 FIRs had been lodged against underage drivers and individuals violating helmet regulations.
Extension of Driving License Fee Deadline
Concerns about driving licenses in Punjab have increased following a tragic accident involving six members of the same family. In response, Punjab’s caretaker government has implemented strict crackdowns on underage drivers and individuals without a valid driving license.
In a positive move, the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, has decided to extend the deadline to increase driving license fees. This comes after the announcement by the Punjab government that the license fee hike was scheduled for January 1, 2024.
This extension gives citizens more time to secure their licenses, avoiding the potential consequence of spending time in a police station if they fail to comply with the deadline.
