Just one week following the decision of the Punjab caretaker government to raise driving license fees in the province, a petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) to potentially suspend the move.
Rana Ali Hasnain, a citizen, has enlisted the help of his lawyer to present the case to the provincial apex court. The petition lists the Punjab government, Inspector General Punjab, and other officials as respondents.
In the petition, the petitioner argues that the increase in driving license fees is illegal and questions the authority of the caretaker government to implement such a decision. He asserts that the role of the caretaker government is limited to overseeing daily affairs and does not extend to making decisions with long-term consequences for citizens.
Rana Ali Hasnain is asking the court to retract the notification and instruct relevant officials to issue licenses at the previous rate.
New Driving License Fee Imposed in Punjab
Recently, the provincial government announced an increase in annual license fees, although the decision has not yet taken effect.
In a tweet, Lahore Traffic Police announced that a new fee structure for driving licenses has been imposed in Punjab. According to the tweet, the fee for learner driving has been increased to Rs. 500, and an annual regular driving license will cost Rs. 980.
Furthermore, individuals who do not comply with the instructions to obtain their license will face the consequence of spending time in the police station.
Online Registration & Renewal
To make the process easier for people, the traffic police have introduced an online service for licensing. This decision aims to simplify and streamline the licensing process, considering the increasing number of people applying for licenses in the region.
In addition, people can renew their licenses through the online system for durations of one, three, five, and ten years. Meanwhile, an international driving license will remain valid for three years.
