According to reports, Microsoft is set to host an event in Seattle on May 20 to elaborate on its strategy for its “AI PCs”. The event is scheduled to take place the day before the Build Developer Conference commences. CEO Satya Nadella will delve into the company’s “AI vision across hardware and software,” as detailed by TheVerge.

Based on information from sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans, the report indicates that Microsoft is confident that its new ARM-based Windows laptops outperform Apple’s M3-powered MacBook Air in terms of CPU performance and AI-driven tasks.

Microsoft is placing a strong emphasis on Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X Elite ARM-based chipset, with plans to showcase various demonstrations highlighting the superiority of their products over Apple’s M3 MacBook in CPU tasks, AI acceleration, and app performance.

The noteworthy aspect of this development is the progress in app emulation, where an x64-based app is translated into ARM. Microsoft believes that Windows AI PCs will offer better emulation than Apple’s Rosetta 2, which was highly praised during the release of Apple’s M1.

So what exactly are these AI PCs? They refer to the ARM-based laptops set to launch in the latter half of the year. While Microsoft has already introduced its Intel Core Ultra and AMD-powered Surface Pro 10, the report suggests that the Surface Pro 10 will also be available with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processors.

These AI-driven devices will feature an exclusive app called AI Explorer, allowing users to retrieve past activities on their devices as a timeline. It utilizes an on-device NPU (Neural Processing Unit) to navigate through a chronological sequence of events.

Moreover, there will be an AI-based video streaming function, along with access to Windows Studio Effects for background blur, the ability to generate images using AI models, and the option to grant Copilot access to PC data for contextual insights and enhanced prompts.
