Foldable phones are now more accessible, although not exactly inexpensive. The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is now available for €800, the lowest price it has ever been. It boasts a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, a 6.9” FHD+ 165Hz LTPO OLED internal display, and a serviceable 3.6” cover display (144Hz, both 10-bit). Although the 12+13MP camera may not be the best, the 3,800mAh battery offers 30W wired charging and some wireless charging (only 5W, but still).
The Motorola Razr 40 is approaching the price range of mid-range phones, but has not quite reached it yet. Nevertheless, it is €175 cheaper than its Ultra counterpart. This phone features a weaker Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, but a similar 6.9” 144Hz internal display. Unfortunately, the tiny cover display is not quite the same. The Razr 40 also boasts a higher resolution 64MP main camera (along with a 13MP ultra wide), and a slightly larger 4,200mAh battery that supports 30W/5W charging.
The Motorola Moto G84 comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (plus a microSD slot), which is quite generous for a €250 phone. Despite its aging Snapdragon 695, it features a respectable 6.5” 10-bit 120Hz OLED display. It also boasts a 50MP main camera (1/1.5”, OIS) and an 8MP ultra wide. With stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 5,000mAh battery that supports 30W wired-only charging, the Moto G84 holds its own.
For €100 more, the Motorola Edge 40 Neo provides a 6.55” OLED display (10-bit FHD+) with a 144Hz refresh rate. Its chipset is exchanged for a Dimensity 7030, and its 50MP main (1/1.5”, OIS) and 13MP ultra wide cameras are quite similar to those of the G84. The 5,000mAh battery supports 68W fast charging, and the Neo also boasts IP68 dust and water resistance, in contrast to the G84’s IP54 water resistance.
Alternatively, you can save €70 by purchasing the Moto G54. It features a 6.5” 120Hz IPS LCD display (FHD+) and a Dimensity 7020 chipset. With a smaller sensor for the 50MP main camera and the absence of an ultra wide, the phone makes some compromises. However, it still comes with stereo speakers, a 3.5mm jack, and a microSD slot, despite the maximum charge rate for the 5,000mAh battery being just 15W.
At a lower price point, the Moto G14 is an economical 4G-only phone (Unisoc T616) that offers a decent 6.5” IPS LCD with FHD+ resolution. This is an impressive feat considering the number of phones in this price range that feature only HD+ displays. It also has a 50MP camera and a 5,000mAh battery with 15W charging, although the display only runs at 60Hz.
For a different brand than Motorola, you can upgrade from the Edge 40 Neo and buy the Poco X6 Pro. It features a stunning 6.67” display with a 10-bit panel, 1,220 x 2,712px resolution, and 120Hz refresh rate. Powered by the faster Dimensity 8300 Ultra chipset, it also has a 64MP main camera (OIS) and an 8MP ultra wide, plus stereo speakers and 67W charging for the 5,000mAh battery. The phone also boasts IP54 dust and water resistance.
At the same price as the X6 Pro, the Poco F5 has half the storage (256GB vs. 512GB). However, both phones boast 12GB of RAM and run on the well-regarded Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chip. Boasting a 12-bit 120Hz AMOLED panel, this phone has a lower FHD+ resolution, but offers the same camera and a 5,000mAh battery with 67W charging.
For an additional €100, the Poco F5 Pro outperforms the X6 Pro with a QHD+ resolution 6.67” display (still 12-bit 120Hz). It also has a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip and a larger 5,160mAh battery with 67W wired and 30W wireless charging. The camera is the same, although both models have an IP53 rating.
When compared to the Poco, the Nothing Phone (2) features a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, with a higher price tag than the Poco. It stands out with a 50MP main camera with a larger sensor (1/1.56”, OIS) and a 50MP ultra wide. The 6.7” 120Hz display is an LTPO panel, although with only FHD+ resolution. It comes with a 4,700mAh battery and supports 45W wired and 15W wireless charging, along with Nothing’s trademark LED lights on the back.
Finally, the Lenovo Legion Go features the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU, the same as the Asus ROG Ally, but with a larger, faster, and higher-resolution LCD – a 144Hz QHD+ panel. Its detachable game controllers are reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch.
