Today, Nokia announced that it has entered into a multi-year cross-license agreement with vivo. As part of the deal, the Chinese company has agreed to pay royalties to Nokia, including catch-up payments for the dispute period.
This agreement resolves all ongoing patent litigation between the two companies, with the specific terms remaining confidential as per their agreement.
For Nokia, this agreement marks one of the final steps in its smartphone licensing renewal cycle and paves the way for vivo to re-enter the European market, where it had been barred from selling new phones due to the ongoing legal dispute (link to the pending lawsuit).
According to Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, this is the sixth major smartphone patent license agreement the company has signed in the past thirteen months. This deal is expected to provide long-term stability to Nokia’s licensing business for many years to come.
On the other hand, vivo stated that the agreement demonstrates “the mutual recognition and respect for each other’s patent value in cellular technology” and will contribute to fostering a positive development environment within the industry.
