Just last week, there was a dubious rumor – and, for what it’s worth, we did caution you about its dubiousness right from the start – that suggested Oppo and vivo were planning to completely withdraw from the foldable market due to significantly lower sales in 2023. It seemed like an odd decision, especially after investing so much in foldable technology, but – the mobile world has seen weirder things happen.
However, that isn’t happening. At least not for Oppo. The company contacted us to dispute the aforementioned rumor and confirm that its commitment to developing future foldables has not changed in any way. This is great news and a reason for us to feel relieved.
Though Oppo may not have achieved much success in the foldable space in developed countries, the OnePlus Open (essentially a rebranded Oppo Find N3 for global markets) was widely considered to be the best large-size book-style foldable of 2023. So, it would have been disappointing to see Oppo leave. But now, we don’t have to worry and can anticipate the arrival of the OnePlus Open 2 and the Find N4 Flip.
Here’s the statement from an Oppo spokesperson regarding the matter:
Oppo’s dedication to the continuous development of foldable smartphone technology remains unchanged. Please stay tuned for our official updates and announcements.
So, crisis averted. The ball’s now in your court, vivo.
