In the previous week, we informed you that the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department will utilize multiple vendors for issuing new number plates in the province. The plan is to streamline the issuance process by implementing a “Free Market System.”
A department official shared with PakWheels.com that they are working on the new system and will unveil it soon. Under this system, multiple vendors will be authorized to issue new plates while the department will maintain regulations on size, material, font, and shape. A list of private vendors will be made available to the public.
The significant change in the new system is that citizens can now obtain their plates from their own cities. Previously, plates were only issued from Lahore by a single company. An awareness campaign will be launched post-Eid, with an official announcement ceremony to follow.
Moving Forward
Over the past three years, more than 3 million vehicle owners have paid for new number plates but have not received them, causing inconvenience. In response, the provincial cabinet has opted to end government control over number plate production, allowing for competition among companies. Consequently, individuals no longer need to pay fees for their plates, a significant departure from the previous requirement for all to pay.
The objective is to simplify the registration process for vehicle owners. Faisal Fareed, the Excise Director General, is overseeing the implementation of these changes. The government has ceased collecting fees for new or duplicate number plates, resulting in cost savings for the people.
By enabling private companies to compete, the government aims to enhance efficiency and reduce costs for vehicle owners. It is estimated that individuals could save up to Rs. 500 on number plates.
