In the previous blog, we mentioned the best sedans under 20 lacs PKR. Here’s the next part: the best used budget hatchbacks under 15 lacs PKR.
Mehran is considered the #1 budget hatchback car in Pakistan. The reason is simple: fuel economy is superb, spares are dead cheap, and market resale is up to the mark. Although the Mehran was discontinued in 2019, you can still find some old 2016-19 models for 11-14 lacs PKR.
We recommend you go with Mehran’s EFI model, which was introduced after 2012. Carburetors have usual cold starting issues in winter; their carb gets choked after 2-3 months, and they issue a lot during monsoon, so it’s much better to go with the EFI option, e.g., 2014-18.
The Suzuki Cultus is also a good family car. For under 15 lacs, that’s the best you can get. It’s a 1,000cc engine and probably the cheapest and best 1.0-liter car that money can get you. under 15 lacs PKR
First of all, it’s a Suzuki hatchback, so resale and parts availability are not an issue. Secondly, the parts are available for dirt cheap pricing, which is just a bit higher than Mehran. Due to the 1.0-liter engine, the power ratio is also good, and you’ll not feel any underpower driving issues on motorways.
The cabin space is also acceptable for a small family; the boot space is just a bit too small. Especially if you’ve got the CNG cylinder at the back, you can hardly fit any small traveling bag.
While we do not recommend Santro, but if you can find a well-maintained option, it’s a good choice. The good things about Santro are its superb drive quality, road grip, cabin isolation, and engine, which is an EFI 1.0 liter, probably the cheapest 1.0 EFI car that money can buy you in Pakistan.
The bad side of Santro is its breakdowns; yes, it has many errors and breakdowns, as we have heard from Santro owners. The parts of Snatro are also not cheap; they are much more expensive than Mehran and Cultus 1st generation and almost as close as WagonR.
The Suzuki Alto is also a good car. Unfortunately, being a 1,000cc hatchback, the cabin space isn’t that great. However, the built quality is also good, better than Mehran and Cultus, and the drive quality is superb. Due to the smaller cabin and bigger engine, the AC cooling is also excellent in Alto.
However, the worst side of this car is its fuel economy, at least according to what we heard from the owners. It hardly gives 8-10 Km/l, especially the carburetor variant. However, some claim that if a good mechanic tunes the car, it can go to 12-13 Km/l.
Cuore is the only Daihatsu car under 15 lacs. It’s an 800cc tiny hatchback made for city driving for a person with a small family. However, you don’t expect anything fancy from this little car. The cabin space is very congested, especially the back seats; they are just not good even for a 5’4” person.
It’s a carburetor-based 800cc car, but the fuel economy is—we don’t know why—just not good. It hardly does 10-11 Km/l in the city, and the spares are also way too expensive relative to its category.
However, the quality of the building is far superior to that of Mehran and Cultus. The road grip is good, the AC performance is good, and the cabin isolation is also fine.
