In the previous blog, we compared BYD Atto 3 with Deepal S07. Now, it’s time to compare the BYD Dolphin with a pre-existing competitor, ORA 03, which is available for sale in Pakistan for a 9 million PKR invoice price.
BYD Dolphin – What is it?
BYD is a Chinese-origin brand that is also the #1 EV car manufacturer and seller, bypassing Tesla and Volkswagen groups. Now, this EV manufacturer is going to settle its feet in Pakistan on August 17th, 2024. Of the three cars that BYD is going to launch, Dolphin is one of them.
It’s a mid-size hatchback electric car that is just a bit bigger than Swift and Picanto. You get a good level of hi-tech goodies and decent practicality for everyday use, all at a reasonable price. We expect it to be the cheapest practical EV car that money can buy you in Pakistan (excluding the Honri Ve and GIGI; we all know these two aren’t family-use cars).
Some good specs we like in Dolphin:
- Ocean-inspired interior that looks really nice and unconventional, not copy/paste of Tesla as other Chinese EV brands are doing
- PU leather seats and dashboard, although leather seats aren’t suitable for the Pakistani environment
- 360-degree cameras with radars
- 12.8” Android Auto/CarPlay that works in landscape and portrait mode
- 315 Km range in the base variant, which is more than enough practicality-wise
- 10-80% in 40 minutes, which is, again, practical in everyday use
- 95 HP in the base variant, good enough for normal and casual long tours
The above features are for the base variant. If you wish to pay more and get upper trims, their range, specs, and HP will increase.
ORA 03 – What is it?
ORA brand is brought to Pakistan by Sazgar Engineering Works, the same group that also owns Haval in Pakistan. Prior to Dolphin, it was the only EV car in the segment without any competition. The base invoice price of this car starts from 9 million PKR. From body size, no one expects a hatchback in 9 million PKR, but EV batteries are expensive to manufacture, really expensive, and hence a high 9 million PKR invoice price.
The exterior’s paint job and overall metal gaps finishing are way better than any locally assembled car available in 9 million PKR.
Inside, the car is smart, and the interior’s built quality is up to the mark. Soft suede leather on the dashboard and seats, ergonomics, and cushioning are very comfortable, a hundred times better than Corolla or any other Crossover in this budget.
The base variant has wireless charging, radars, a range of cameras for blind spot monitoring, and a 10.25-inch display, which is bright and crisp enough that 4K movies on Netflix would look great on it.
The back seats are good for 6-feet people, both headroom and legroom wise. However, being a hatchback, you wouldn’t expect the cabin to be as spacious as a Sonata. Three full-sized adults might find it a bit cramped, with their arms likely touching
