So you’ve decided to take your ride off-road? Well, that’s the perfect season for doing so. It’s the monsoon season, so landsliding in northern areas is common these days, and that’s when most of our off-road guys plan their trip for some extreme adrenaline rush.
But you want to get back alive, right? Here are some precautions you might consider before going to the north trip. The data is obtained from our team members, who are seasonal off-roaders and rally drivers.
4×4 Vehicle is Must
Whether you choose an LC, Surf, Revo, or any jeep or SUV, it must be a 4×4 terrain vehicle. If you plan to visit nearby Northern areas like Murree, Nathia Gali, or Muzzafarbad, a simple FWD sedan or hatchback like City or even WagonR will work fine.
For extreme off-roading like Fairy Meadows, Baboon Top, Kumraat, Badgoi Top, and Chitral, you must need a heavy-duty 4×4 off-road vehicle, like a Land Cruiser J70, Revo, Toyota Surf, LC200, Cygnus 1990, Pajero, and Prado 1995. FWD and RWD vehicles do not work here.
Remove All Side Skirts from the Car
Make sure to remove the side skirts from the car, including footrests as well. Issue? These skirts lower the ground clearance, and if you know, GC plays an important role in muddy off-road trails. These skirts will eventually break and may even dent the bottom side door areas where they are attached to nuts.
Install Off-road Bumpers
Especially if you have a luxury SUV like the LC200 or Toyota Prado, their standard bumpers can break during off-roading due to their low approach and departure angles. For off-road driving, you need high departure and approach angles, which is why it’s recommended to install proper off-road bumpers. These bumpers are designed to be higher, providing better departure and approach angles. It’s an expensive modification, but if you’re planning to make an off-road trip, at least do it properly.
Skills Matter a Lot
No matter how good your car is for off-roading, without the right skills, even the best cars are useless! It’s all about the skills.
The very first sign of a good off-road driver is that they don’t panic, no matter how bad the trail is.
Make sure you’ve got proper vision on all four tires, and always stay calm while driving. Try to go as slow as possible—speed is never your friend in off-roading—and don’t rush!
If the trail is too bad or muddy for tires to get traction, try putting dry sand or wood locks in front of them.
There are many other tips we got; we’ll mention them clearly in the next blog.
Have at Least One Vehicle for Backup
It’s good if you go off-roading in groups or at least in 2 vehicles. In this way, if your vehicle gets stuck in the muddy swamp and can’t get out, the secondary vehicle can tow your car from that trail.
Off-road Tyres Also Must to Have
Off-road tires have more deep bumps than normal tires, and their rubber is designed to withstand extreme road conditions. They provide much better traction on uneven, muddy, dirt, and gravel roads. However, their on-road performance isn’t good. They’re bumpy and consume too much fuel on highway roads.
