Recognizing their services for Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari approved awards for 104 individuals on this Independence Day. The awards will be presented during a ceremony on March 23, next year. The awards were announced in the fields of education, arts, medicine, sports, philanthropy, taxpayers, exporters, public services, gallantry, education, science, and engineering.

And for petrolheads, there is good news as the government has recognized the services of legendary desert rally driver Mir Nadir Khan Magsi, who will receive Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for his role in promoting jeep rally as a sport. Magsi is the most famous rally driver in Pakistan, and every one of us has heard his name related to rallies, especially the Cholistan Jeep Rally, the biggest such event in the country. Since our childhood, we have listened to the news and announced “Nadir Magsi Cholistan Rally Jeet Gye“, proof of his legendary status in this sport.

Here is his interview to PakWheels from 2019, when he won Sarfaranga Rally:

Nadir Magsi – About Off-road Racing

During an interview, Magsi stated that he has loved cars since childhood and made his first vehicle, a go-kart, when he was 10-11 years old. “I have done a lot of track racing in Florida during my stay in the US,” he stated, adding that anyone who likes racing should know that go-karting is the base.

“If you can do karting, you will be an excellent driver,” he stated, mentioning that all the top drivers, be it F1 or off-roading, came from karting.  Talking about desert racing, Magsi said that the first 4-5 years were tough because few people would be able to watch it in the desert, but with time, it got the media’s attention, and now it is pretty popular. “I would like to establish a strong base for the future drivers with more exposure and sponsorship from multinationals, like the rest of the world,” he said.

In short, it is a deserving award to the legend of off-road racing and we congratulate him on this.
