Mercedes Benz W124 is a perfect classic with practical features, vault-built quality, and a roomy cabin one could ask for. Coming in the most budget-friendly range, you can customize this saloon to a must luxurious cockpit that can become a travel partner for your bon voyages. Let’s take a look at some of its mechanical details.
Mercedes Benz W124- History:
It is a medium-sized, compact passenger car that remained in production from 1985 to 1997. Having a simple rectangular-styled body design, it came into five different trim levels: a saloon, estate, coupe, convertible, and a stretched six-door limousine. It is still considered an iconic car in Pakistan and has millions of fans giving out for this cheap luxury. Although the one we reviewed was a left-hand drive, and many of you find it difficult to drive, its owner didn’t have much difficulty maneuvering this beautiful beast.
Make, Model, and Variant:
This was a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, W124, E420, with a V8 engine mated to a 4-speed transmission. It is the one-of-a-kind sports-line edition in Pakistan, vouching for its timeless elegance.
Modifications
These days, Mercedes classic cars are gaining a lot of attention from our young generation due to it being an easy project for modification. Since its parts are exchangeable with Porsche and can be easily sourced from other countries, it is considered a hot project car.
Omar, the owner of this one, purchased it from its fourth owner and went for sourcing its genuine brake pads, rear and front suspension, and clutch plates from the UK and got them fixed for improved performance. It took a hefty amount and a lot of time to get things fixed into place.
Features and Known faults
It has a premium, spacious cabin loaded with features like an electric and memory driver’s seat, Cruise Control, and an Analog odometer. Besides being a spectacular car, it has some faults always associated with Mercedes classics, like breakable AC vents and a missing storage compartment for cup holders. The worst one was its biodegradable wiring harness, which makes it a perfect treat for our beloved squeakers.
Price and Fuel Economy
Being a V8, it gives a decent fuel average of 8 km/L within the city, and on longer routes, it goes up to 10.4 km/L at a top speed of 124km/hr.
The Mercedes-Benz W124 successfully comes in a price bracket of 4 lacs to 30 lacs, hugely ranging in quality and maintenance level, but I bet, if you are a true enthusiast, you can turn it into a head-turner.
