Despite the country’s ongoing economic crunch, the Punjab government is set to purchase luxury cars for the Punjab Assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker. According to media reports, the decision was taken during a meeting of the finance committee chaired by Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan.

During the meeting, it was proposed that the Land Cruiser LC300 cost around Rs. 10 crores, should be bought for Ahmad Khan, highlighting that the speaker doesn’t have a car of this category. “Furthermore, another proposal was presented that a Toyota Fortuner should be bought for deputy speaker and secretary, costing around Rs. 2.25 crores, each along with two Toyota Vigo cars for security purposes,” the media report stated.

This means the total cost will be around Rs. 18 crores of these cars, the report mentioned.

Opposition’s Stance

Three members of the opposition in the committee opposed the purchase, citing the ongoing economic condition of the country. Ali Imtiaz Warraich, the opposition member, stated that buying new cars in these circumstances is not a good decision. Meanwhile, other members, including Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman and Pakistan People Party’s (PPP) Ali Haider Gillani, supported the decision.

Petrol Price Hike For Masses

Meanwhile, the government has announced two consecutive price hikes for petroleum goods in the country. After the hike, the current price of petrol is Rs. 275.60/liter, and diesel stands at Rs. 283.63/liter. It is pertinent to mention that high fuel prices mean high inflation in the country, as rates of daily commodities are hiked as soon as fuel prices go up.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government recently revised the token tax and registration rates for cars in the province under the new budget 2024-25.
