In a surprising turn of events, the Punjab government has significantly changed its plans for promoting eco-friendly transportation. Initially, there was much excitement among students in the province when the government announced its scheme to distribute electric bikes on interest-free installment plans. However, just weeks after creating this buzz, the government reversed its decision.
The Reasons
As per the recent updates, the provincial government has rubbished the plan altogether citing the reasons of battery theft and low mileage. As an alternative offer, the govt will distribute the conventional petrol-powered motorcycles on easy and interest-free installments.
The update come forth during meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The government acknowledged the environmental benefits of eco-friendly motorbikes but called it an impractical plan given the current circumstances.
This shift in the plan has left many disappointed; students who had high hopes for the electric bikes are wryly questioning the whole episode, noting that the government’s decision goes against efforts to combat air pollution and promote sustainability.
Overall, the Punjab government’s decision to backtrack on its electric bike scheme has raised questions about the future of eco-friendly transportation initiatives in the province.
The move has sparked disappointment among environmental enthusiasts who had hoped for a transition towards eco-friendly transportation.
Moreover, medical experts also voiced concerns about the decision, highlighting the health hazards associated with fuel-powered motorbikes.
The Concerns
After this update, concerns were also raised about a scheme under which the provincial government announced that it would give electric bikes to 15,000 teachers across the province.
The government devised this plan a week before, which consisted of three phases. First, 5,000 teachers will get electric bikes. Then, in later stages, 10,000 more teachers will get them.
