After making grounds in smart phone industry worldwide, the technology giant from China, Xiaomi has started pushing it boundaries to electric vehicles market. The company is gearing up to unveil SUV rivaling head-to-head with Tesla’s Model Y.

This shift marks a significant expansion of Xiaomi’s portfolio, demonstrating the company’s ambition to become a major player in the automotive industry.

The journey began in 2021 when Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun publicly declared the company’s intentions to enter the EV market. Since then, Xiaomi has been meticulously developing its electric SUV, benchmarking it against Tesla’s popular Model Y.

From Ambition to Reality – The Journey

Initially, Xiaomi’s focus was on the production of its first electric vehicle, the SU7 sedan. The company aimed to produce 100,000 units of the SU7 this year, marking its entry into the EV market. With the SU7 now in production, Xiaomi is shifting its attention to the SUV, targeting a launch in late 2025 or early 2026.

This timeline coincides with the completion of the second phase of Xiaomi’s new assembly plant in Beijing, ensuring the company is well-prepared for mass production.

While specific details about the SUV remain under wraps, industry insiders suggest it will build on the foundation laid by the SU7, addressing any shortcomings and enhancing the overall design. Affordability is a key aspect of Xiaomi’s strategy.

The Price

The SU7 sedan starts at RMB 215,900 (PKR 8,338,632), and the upcoming SUV is rumored to be even more budget-friendly, with a potential price tag of RMB 150,000 (PKR 5,793,398 PKR). This pricing strategy could significantly disrupt the Chinese EV market by making electric vehicles more accessible to a wider audience.

With an annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles at its Beijing plant, Xiaomi is poised to become a formidable force in the rapidly growing EV market. The company’s entry into this space is a clear signal of its long-term vision and innovative spirit, promising exciting developments in the years to come.
