For those with a 2023 top-of-the-line Galaxy device who might be feeling a bit left out from all the AI features that Galaxy S24 owners are enjoying, tomorrow is your lucky day to experience it for yourself.

Tomorrow, the Samsung Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, S23 FE, as well as the foldable Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 will all be receiving the One UI 6.1 update that will unlock the new Galaxy AI features.

For those in the US, this update includes phones from carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, UScellular, and others, as well as devices bought from retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. Unlocked S23/Z phones will have to wait until April. On the other hand, European units seem to have no such restrictions.

Tablet users with the Wi-Fi versions of the Galaxy Tab S9, Tab S9+, and Tab S9 Ultra can also look forward to the update tomorrow, while the 5G variants will receive it in April. Unfortunately, the Tab S9 FE models will not be included.

The new features include:

  • Circle to Search with Google: a tool similar to Google Lens, but more accessible
  • Live Translate: real-time two-way voice translation for phone calls (with optional live captions)
  • Generative Edit: ability to resize, remove objects, and edit backgrounds without needing Photoshop skills
  • Chat Assist: Samsung keyboard feature offering translation, writing advice, and spelling and grammar help

The German press release mentions additional features like Edit Suggestion, Instant Slow-Mo, Note Assist (automatic summaries and translations of notes), and Transcribe Assist (convert audio recordings to text), but these were not included in the US release.

Keep in mind that these features are free to use until the end of 2025. The future cost of these services is unclear (Samsung’s official response does not provide much detail). Also, except for Chat Assist, these features rely on cloud services and require an internet connection.

Samsung is reportedly planning to bring Galaxy AI to the S22 series, but details about the release date are still unknown.
