The Samsung Galaxy S24 series is here to demonstrate that AI is indeed the future, but a simple upgrade is more important for the present – all three S24 phones are equipped with LTPO displays with 1-120Hz variable refresh rate. This is a long-awaited improvement for those who prefer the vanilla and plus models, even though the Ultra phones already had this feature.
The Samsung Galaxy S24+ has received another upgrade – QHD+ resolution. This, combined with a flat 6.7” display, provides a similar experience to the Ultra at a lower price point. The phone is roughly the same size as the S23+ but offers a display that is slightly larger and a battery with 200mAh more capacity (4,900mAh).
Another important change with the S24+ is that all configurations now come with 12GB of RAM, the same as the Ultra. There are also options for storage between 256GB and 512GB.
Now, the part that Samsung has been quiet about – the S24 Ultra will exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipsets, while the S24 and S24+ will only get this in some regions. Otherwise, they will receive the new Exynos 2400. The exact regions for each chipset are yet to be determined, so stay tuned for more details.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 also boasts a slightly larger display (6.2”) but retains FHD+ resolution. The panel has been upgraded to LTPO (1-120Hz), and all S24 phones have a peak brightness of 2,600 nits with Vision Booster (compared to last year’s displays that topped out at 1,750 nits).
The Galaxy S24 also features a slightly larger battery, with an extra 100mAh bringing its capacity to 4,000mAh. However, charging capabilities remain the same (25W wired and 15W wireless). Interestingly, the charging capabilities for the S24+ remain unchanged as well (45W wired, 15W wireless with Qi charging). Using a compatible USB charger, the S24 charges to 50% in 30 minutes, while the S24+ reaches 65% in the same timeframe.
As mentioned earlier, the vanilla model missed out on both the memory upgrade and storage upgrade, as the base configuration still includes 8GB of RAM and only 128GB of storage.
Exciting news for potential buyers – the Samsung Galaxy S24 series is set to receive 7 generations of OS updates and 7 years of security patches. This means these phones will still be getting support well into the 2030s! They will launch with Android 14 and One UI 6.1 out of the box, most certainly a positive aspect for long-term use.
Now onto the cameras – the S24 and S24+ are equipped with a 50MP main (f/1.8 lens with OIS), a 12MP ultrawide (120°) and a 10MP tele camera with 3x zoom (f/2.4). The front-facing camera has a 12MP sensor (f/2.2 80° lens), with no changes here.
As for the build, the S24 and S24+ continue to use aluminum (unlike the Ultra, which now has a titanium frame) and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 from last year. The dust and water resistance rating is at IP68, as expected.
Both phones will have sub-6GHz and mmWave variants, though availability will differ by region. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6E (not 7) and Bluetooth 5.3.
The starting price for the Galaxy S24 is $800/€900/£800 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The Galaxy S24+ starts at $1,000/€1,150/£1,000 with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
