When the Galaxy S24 series was launched, Samsung made a commitment to provide 7 years of software support, including both OS and security updates. While Google had already promised the same for the Pixel 8 series, OnePlus has a different perspective, believing that anything beyond 5 years is not efficient in terms of resources.

In a conversation with Samsung VP Nicholas Porter, we inquired about the reasoning behind the decision to offer 7 years of support. Samsung’s analysis of customer feedback indicated that extending support adds significant value to the smartphone.

This added value justifies the extra effort required for ongoing maintenance.

We asked Samsung why it decided give its phones 7 years of support

Research by Samsung revealed that people are holding onto their phones for longer periods of time, making it logical for manufacturers to extend software support.

In the end, Samsung believes that even if some users may not prioritize extended support, they will still benefit from improved security and continued smooth performance of their phones over the years, ultimately leading to a better user experience.

Despite offering 5 years of support for its latest A-series phones – the Galaxy A55 and Galaxy A35 – Samsung clearly believes that the hardware in its flagship devices is durable enough to remain relevant and functional even in 2031.
