The automotive market in Pakistan is seeing some shifts, with popular vehicles such as the Suzuki Swift, Toyota Fortuner, and Toyota Hilux experiencing drastic changes in sales. According to the latest data released by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), these well-known vehicles have witnessed considerable fluctuations, reflecting broader trends in consumer preferences, economic factors, and market dynamics.
Swift’s Dramatic Surge
Suzuki‘s Swift, a long-time favorite among Pakistani consumers, has seen a massive sales increase of 178%. In November 2024, the vehicle recorded a whopping 917 units sold, compared to only 330 units in October 2024.
This surge is notable, considering the overall downturn in sales for the local automotive industry. However, while Swift’s growth has been impressive, the bigger picture reveals a different story.
Pakistan Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC), the maker of Swift, saw a 26% decline in its overall sales for November 2024. The company sold 5,374 units in November, down from 7,302 units in October 2024. This suggests that while Swift is doing well, the broader portfolio of PSMC’s vehicles, including the Alto, Cultus, and Wagon R, may be struggling to maintain their previous momentum.
The company managed to sell 2,756 units of Suzuki Cultus, 202 units of Suzuki Wagon R, 917 units of Suzuki Swift, 206 units of Suzuki Bolan, 636 units of Suzuki Every and 478 units of Suzuki Ravi.
The Fall of Fortuner and Hilux
On the other hand, Toyota’s high-end models—Hilux and Fortuner—have been hit by a significant slump in sales. According to PAMA, sales for these two vehicles decreased by a staggering 91% in November 2024.
The local car maker sold only 32 units of both the Hilux and Fortuner combined last month, compared to 431 units in October 2024. This sharp decline could be a major concern for Toyota, which has enjoyed a loyal customer base for its premium offerings.
There are several factors that may be contributing to this drastic reduction in sales of these high-end vehicles. High inflation rates, striking price charts and tightening car loan policies have made these premium vehicles increasingly out of reach for many buyers.
Coming to overall sales, as per the report, car sales have declined by 22%, car makers sold 10,163 units in this November compared to 13,108 vehicles in October 2024. Meanwhile year-on-year (YoY) sales reported a significant growth of 57%. Local car manufacturers managed to sell 50,856 units in FY25 against 33,637 cars in FY24.
