If there were any uncertainties, let’s clear them up all at once. AI is unquestionably the buzzword of this year, despite also being the buzzword of last year. But a crucial difference exists – last year it was the buzzword across the tech industry. This year, it’s all about mobile. Just ask Samsung.

Or Apple, as it turns out. The new iPhone generation will feature a greatly improved Neural Engine – can you guess why? Yes, you guessed it. AI is the key. Specifically, generative AI features coming to iOS 18, which is expected to be announced in June and released in September alongside the iPhone 16 family.

iPhone 16's vastly improved Neural Engine will work in conjunction with iOS 18's generative AI features

And speaking of those upcoming iPhones, they are said to benefit from a Neural Engine with “significantly” more cores, according to a new report from Taiwan today. While the exact number of cores isn’t provided, the fact that there will be more of them is important, as the iPhone Neural Engine has had the same number of cores (16) since the iPhone 12.

It seems like we’re in for a substantial advancement, which is fitting for this year of AI. A huge leap in AI features necessitates a huge leap in hardware to support them. And get this – there might even be a new version of Siri. Perhaps one that’s finally intelligent.
