Apple first introduced its ProMotion displays with a 120Hz refresh rate a few generations ago, but so far, the top-notch panels have not made their way to the more budget-friendly iPhones. This has been a source of frustration for users for some time.
As per the most recent report from the supply chain, Apple is planning to include its premium LTPO OLED panels in the more affordable iPhones by 2025, which means that the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus will be the first to receive them. With the LTPO panel’s ability to control refresh rates more precisely, including activating the ProMotion feature and adjusting down to 1Hz, Apple will finally introduce an Always-on display to its cheaper models.
According to industry sources, the success of this plan hinges on BOE. The company provided samples to Apple last year, but even if they are approved soon, BOE won’t be able to scale up production in time for the release of the iPhone 16 series. Additionally, there have been reports of BOE struggling to meet Apple’s rigorous standards, making the iPhone 17 series a more realistic target for BOE.
