You spend all your life savings on a car and sell your property and all-important life assets to get your first car. While not everybody sells their important life assets to purchase a vehicle, the majority in Pakistan usually spend all their life savings and assets just to own a car.
However, once you get your hands on behind the steering, it’ll start to get to suck your wallet. Besides purchase cost and fuel cost, there are a lot of hidden things that you’re going to spend on it, even if it’s new.
Here’s an editor’s article on how much a new 660-1,000cc car will cost every year:

Yearly Owning Cost for a Brand new 660-1000cc Compact Hatchback
Suppose you spend 25-40 lacs on a brand new 660-1,000cc hatchback. Here’s how much it’s going to cost you in a complete year.
These are considered budget cars in the market as compared to other options. Therefore, their running cost, fuel economy, and tuning cost are relatively cheaper than other 1300-1800cc brand-new cars. For calculation, we’ll be taking the cost of Suzuki Alto, Suzuki WagonR, and Kia Picanto, adding them, and dividing them with total observations to get an average:
Engine oil costs:
- Suzuki Alto Engine oil: ₨. 3,932
- Suzuki WagonR/Cultus Engine oil: ₨. 5,561
- Kia Picanto Engine Oil: Rs. 8,500
Air filter costs
Here’s the filter cost:
- Suzuki Alto Air Filter: Rs. 4,700
- Suzuki WagonR Air Filter: Rs. 4,399
- Kia Picanto Air Filter: Rs. 3,200
Tuning Labour Cost
The labor cost depends on the dealership and manufacturer. However, the average labor cost of the car will be about 5,000-8,000.
So if you do three tuning of your car in a year, it’ll cost you about Rs.15,000 to 23,000.
Note that that’s just an average. No dealership tells you the labor cost on their website or the phone. That’s just the observation we got from our Pakwheels colleague.
Tires Cost
Tires are one of the most expensive maintenance that you will do for your car after 4-5 years. Now, many factors play here, like what brand tires you use, used or new and, how much you run them, how you run them. For example, if Michelin tires cost you 200k PKR, same-size general tires would cost you about 50k. That’s a huge difference, right?
But no one would be going to use branded Meichilien tires in a 660-1,000cc compact hatchback. Most people with these cars would opt for budget and economical tires, which is also a wise choice.
- The average tire cost for a 660-1,000cc car would be around Rs. 50,000
- Average life of tires: 50,000 km
- Per km cost of tire: Re. 1
Fuel cost
Now, that’s a very dynamic situation: Alto would have a different fuel average, Picanto’s average would be different, and Cultus’s average would be different. So, we would calculate by taking the median:
- Suzuki Alto fuel economy: 17 Kmpl
- Kia Picanto fuel economy: 12 Kmpl
- Suzuki WagonR fuel economy: 14 Kmpl
Total Annual Ownership Cost
Here’s the total yearly ownership cost of three popular brand-new budget segment cars, including Alto, WagonR, and Picanto.

- Engine Oil: ₨ 7,864
- Air Filter: ₨ 4,700
