Back in 2016, WhatsApp added text formatting to its platform and is now experimenting with more formatting options for Android and iOS users who are part of the beta program.

For WhatsApp beta users on Android and iOS, new formatting options include using ‘>’ to highlight a part of the message, and using ‘-‘ or ‘*’ to create bulleted lists. Numbered lists can be created by simply adding a number before the message. The image below demonstrates how these options work.

These new text formatting features are currently accessible to Android users with version 2.24.2.9 of the WhatsApp beta app, and to iOS users with version 23.21.1.75, and are expected to roll out to the stable channel in the upcoming weeks.
